Day 10 (July 25): Yamakoshi (山越駅) to Hakodate (函館市)
(The following entry is from my paper diary, hence the quotation marks. Comments may follow at the end. These are written after the completion of the trip.)
Day 10: Sunday, July 25, 2010. Arrive in Hakodate
"I noticed that the lights in Yamakoshi Station were out at about 11:30. Too late for me, but the astro-turf mat in the station would have been better than trying to balance myself on the bus shelter bench. Also, the passing of vehicles until late wouldn't have been quite as disturbing to rest. Moved everything to the station (where I had recharged my iphone yesterday!) and ate more oatmeal and raisins for breakfast.
Passed Ohnuma and took a few pictures. Good tunnel under the pass. Mostly downhill from there, though I got on a road parallel to the Rte. 5 by-pass. A mistake as it was up and down. When that road ended I turned right and downhill to find 'old' 5, called Akamatsu Kaido for the pine trees lining it. Much better. Stopped at Mosburger then Mr. Donut.
Arrived in Hakodate. My first choice of quarters was locked so I went to the International Guest House. Part of the YH association I think, and their rates were the same but had a small private room. Thought I'd have some meat and beer at 'Hakodate Beer' but when I returned it was closed until 5:30. I ate a seafood ramen at 'Kamome Ramen' as seen in Lonely Planet. Okay, but not worth 1,150 yen. Some Chinese tourists were looking the place over when I finished. Returned to the hostel and took a bath. Went out, bought a chuhai, put on the Rolling Stones and walked slowly - nursing my slightly swollen left leg as usual - to the Russian church. Took pictures of various buildings of the period.
When I got back an oriental girl speaking American English asked me if there was a convenience store nearby as the supermarket across the street was closed. I mentioned a nearby Lawson's. I should have gone with her if only to find out what she was doing in Hakodate!"
A more detailed time line:
5:10 am., left Yamakoshi Station
9:15, arrived at west end of Lake Onuma at junction of Rte. 5 and Rte. 338
c. 12:00, arrived at Hakodate Station
