Day 20: Wednesday, August 4, 2010. Shibata to Joetsu
"Left Shibata at 4:15, still dark. Sun came up at 4:48. Little traffic and made Agano by 5:45. Didn't bother to look for the B-29 crash site, but the paddy fields are still there with green plants. Followed Rte. 460. Turned south on Rte. 116. Turned west at Myohojo for the coast road, Rte. 402. Not an interesting coastline at this point. Continued on Rte. 362 and passed the nuclear power station inland. Got to Kashinazaki. Walked bicycle through tunnels.
Finally reached Naretsu area at about 5:15. Saw one hotel for 4,800 yen, but didn't check as I wanted to be 'closer' to town. Saw a Route Inn on the map, but it was full. Following the clerk's advice I reversed directions and headed south on Joetsu Doro. Checked in at the Sun Plaza Hotel.
Ate dinner at Kidashokudo. Cafeteria style. Good price, but wanted to stop at McDonald's, too. Saw a blond man inside and saw his buddy at the counter. Some nonsense with the manager about coffee creamer or coffee. I was getting irritated so when the foreigner spoke to me I snapped at him about wasting my time. Shouldn't have, but did. Maybe it was the long ride today.
Total distance: 165 km"
