Day 21: Thursday, August 5, 2010. Joetsu to Lake Nojiri
"Went to Gusto for breakfast - egg, sausage and hamburg - then returned to hotel to pack the bicycle. I took my time going to Nojiri-ko. Stopped to buy sandals at a TSOC shoe store. Very hot. Drank much.

No severe grades, but pretty constantly climbing. Arrived lake area about 3:30. No one was there so I hung out my sleeping bag and tent for the first time since Hokkaido. Finally decided to see the water first, again, after reading a few pages of 'Moby Dick'. George's* place is high on the hill overlooking the lake. When I returned he was home with Helen*. Took baths then went out to eat at a place they often go called 'Isa'. Helen and the owner's kids played with sparklers afterward. An 8-person group of mostly foreigners, English-speaking young people, came in. Stopped at 7-11 for ice cream on way back. Called Akemi.

Total distance: 47 km"
* Names changed at their request.
