Day 45 (August 29): In Beppu(別府市) or "Glum will not do."
Day 45. Sunday, August 29, 2010. 10:30 am. In Kannawa Onsen area of Beppu, Oita-ken.
I should have mentioned y'day that by crossing the Bungo Strait I arrived on the southern Home Island of Kyushu.
Sitting in a Joyful (a newer "family" restaurant chain) now drinking an immoderate number of lattes from the drink bar. I've decided: I shall ride my unburdened bicycle up Route 500 to Myoban Onsen. Google tells me it's about 3.5 kms and my own eyes tell me it's all uphill. The view is supposed to be good.
It's 12:40 and I'm back down from Myoban. Entered a large open air onsen with a sulfur smell and cloudy water. Very nice with a view of distant Beppu and highway bridge in the intermediate distance. There's no escaping infrastructure in this country. I'm sitting in "Apple" coffee shop sipping Wiener Kaffe watching the heavy rain. Perhaps I should go out now and relive bicycling through the typhoons in Akita-ken and Fukui-ken. Perhaps not. The rest of this rainy day I shall devote to bathing, eating and drinking but not necessarily in that order.
It's 10:30 now. Two hours ago I was feeling a bit glum and had decided to forgo the evening bath. However, just at that time, two young men, students at Hiroshima National University named Hikaru and Tomoya arrived and, as it happened, came to my rescue by needing someone to guide them to the Hiyotan Onsen 10 minutes away. The YH manager, Aoyama-san, knowing that I had found the place last night, asked me if I was going again. So... A more enjoyable experience including the beer afterward.
