Day 48 (September 1): Kumamoto(熊本市) to Omuta(大牟田市)or "Aoi"

Day 48. Wednesday, September 1, 2010. Kumamoto to Omuta.

(Written Sept. 3rd.) Went west past castle to coast road. Argh! Must have been the narrowest road I've yet encountered. Sea wall on my left, traffic on the right. Improved a little as the road turned inland. Got to Omuta, Fukuoka-ken at about 12:30 and after a few email exchanges met my friend from Kyoto days in 1978, Sato-san. Still a nice guy. Could have been a wrestler if he hadn't become a monk. Married. Two kids. Younger one with Downs and several strokes leaving him with the use of one arm and one leg. Talk about being dealt a tough hand. Loving parents. Encourage him to try to do things himself. Hiroaki's favorite color is blue. Constantly saying "aoi, aoi" (blue). Has the happiest smile.
After lunch we picked up the two boys and headed to Sato-san's cabin near Kusu back in Oita-ken. He calls it "Venus" for he says it's Venus-like: small, but brilliant in the evening sky. Dinner in town. Wore the jimbei I bought in Dogo Onsen for the first time. Cool night air. Sleep.
